چکیده

The patient's sister had left hospital a few months earlier after sustaining a scald to the scalp which had required skin grafting. A proprietary shampoo had been recommended by a local shopkeeper to keep the scalp clean. One evening, another of the patient's siblings, her 7-year-old brother, rubbed some of this shampoo in during a nappy change. The patient was unsettled overnight, and presented the following morning with the lesions shown in Fig. 1. The lesions were treated with silver sulphadiazine cream and healed within 7 days (Fig. 2). Subsequent investigations showed that the 'shampoo' was 17t% cetrimide solution (Cetavlon).

Monocationic surfactant induced ultra structural changes in antibiotic resistant Escherichia coli.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Cetrimide is a monocationic surfactant, commonly used for disinfection of hospital floors, equipments, for cleansing of burns and wounds, hand wash, etc. We evaluated whether antibiotic resistant (AR) Escherichia coli isolates from hospital settings (nosocomial pathogens) show any evidence of significant reduction in their susceptibility to cetrimide. Also the response o...

Use of an improved cetrimide agar medium and other culture methods for Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

In a comparison of two selective media for Ps. aeruginosa containing 0.03% cetrimide, stronger fluorescence was obtained from growth on the medium prepared with King's medium B as the base (CTA 2); although Ps. aeruginosa was not isolated more frequently from burns on this medium than from cetrimide agar made with a Lemco base (CTA 1), results were easier to assess and there were fewer cases of...

Improved Culture Methods for the Detection of Ps. pyocyanea.

Williams, Clayton-Cooper, Faulkner, and Thomas (1944) drew attention to the fact that Pseudomonas pyocyanea may survive and even multiply in solutions of cetrimide (cetyl-trimethyl-ammonium-bromide). The use of this compound in selective media for the identification of Ps. pyocyanea was suggested by Harper and Cawston (1945), who recommended a concentration of 1 % in nutrient agar. This medium,...

A cabinet for the detection of fluorescent bacterial cultures.

A cabinet for detecting the fluorescence of cultures on agar media is described. The use of fluorescence as a criterion for detection of Ps. pyocyanea is compared with that of the oxidase reaction. From a series of patients with burns, all colonies of Gram-negative bacilli which gave a positive oxidase reaction yielded fluorescent subcultures on 0.03% cetrimide agar; all fluorescent cultures on...

The use of a new cetrimide product in a selective medium for Pseudomonas pyocyanea.

A selective medium containing 0.1 % cetrimide in nutrient agar has been used here during the past four years for the routine identification of Ps. pyocyanea in burns (Lowbury, 1951). This medium, a modification of those previously described by Harper and Cawston (1945) and by Hood (1948), has proved convenient and efficient. In October, 1953, the manufacturers announced the production of a modi...
